The South East Asian Student Recruitment Market
Student mobility from Southeast Asia and China continues to rise, with China and Vietnam leading the way. In 2022/23, China had over one million students studying abroad (according to Unesco), while Vietnam sent approximately 132,000, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand with over 50,000 and 32,000 students respectively. Vietnamese students often choose Japan and South Korea, while others prefer English-speaking destinations like the UK, Australia, and the US.
Regional universities are gaining popularity due to cost savings and improved rankings, with 33 Asian universities in the global top 200 in 2024. Transnational Education (TNE) is growing, especially in Vietnam, enabling international qualifications without leaving home. This reflects a shift in preferences as students consider diverse destinations and pathways for quality education.
