Eastern Europe as a Student Recruitment Market
Sofia / Bulgaria
Although Bulgaria hosts a rising number of international students many Bulgarian students also choose to study abroad for full degrees, especially in Western Europe and North America, seeking programs with strong global reputations and post-study opportunities. European degree mobility is part of a broader trend within the EU, where 1.76 million students from abroad are enrolled in tertiary studies, many pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees outside their home countries.
Belgrade / Serbia
Serbian students demonstrate outward mobility, with historical data showing thousands of Serbian tertiary students studying abroad, and strong participation in EU mobility schemes such as Erasmus+ (which supports student mobility across Europe). Many Belgrade candidates target bachelor’s programs in EU countries like Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, driven by the value of internationally recognized credentials and expanded career options.
Bucharest / Romania
Romania is a major source of outbound undergraduates: UNESCO and mobility data estimate 35,000 Romanian students studying overseas at university level, reflecting sustained interest in global study pathways and opportunities for international exposure and employment prospects. Romanian students often pursue degrees across Europe and beyond, contributing to a sizeable diaspora of globally mobile graduates.
Athens / Greece
Greek students also pursue international bachelor’s degrees in response to limited domestic English-taught options and a desire for enhanced global career trajectories. While Greece’s official active student population stands at around 350,000 after recent higher-education reforms, many aspirational undergraduates look abroad for program diversity and competitive international environments. Currently some 40,000 Greek students are studying abroad (UNESCO)
