Central Europe as a Student Recruitment Market

Central Europe is a growing and strategic market for institutions recruiting high-school students heading abroad for undergraduate study. In the Czech Republic, the number of international tertiary students has risen steadily, with around 55,000 foreign students enrolled (many at bachelor’s level), reflecting strong mobility interest from the region and neighbouring countries; about half of this activity is concentrated in Prague.

In Slovakia, a significant share of domestic students choose to continue their studies abroad , with roughly 12 % of Slovak students graduating overseas, well above the EU average (according to trade.gov), underscoring high outbound interest following secondary education. Hungary likewise sees outward mobility among students, with tens of thousands enrolled abroad historically and a steady pipeline of English-taught program seekers emerging from Hungarian secondary schools.

In Hungary, interest in studying abroad among secondary students is a growing trend, even if formal outbound degree mobility remains relatively low compared with Western Europe. Recent reports show that only around 7.7 % of Hungarian tertiary graduates completed part or all of their studies abroad, indicating that the majority currently pursue higher education domestically, but with significant interest in international pathways emerging among students long before university entry (source: EU Commission)

Poland presents both undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment opportunities: the country’s higher education sector now hosts over 107,000 international students, making up around 8.6 % of all tertiary enrollments, a five-fold increase over the past decade, and highlighting robust cross-border demand and awareness of international study pathways. Additionally, from Poland itself, thousands of high-school graduates pursue degrees abroad each year, reinforcing the value of targeted recruitment events that engage students before they make study decisions.

Together, these trends show strong outbound mobility aspirations among Central European secondary students, making cities such as Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Warsaw, and Krakow vital hubs for international undergraduate recruitment
